She detours to greet Mrs. Greenbaum, is coaxed inside, and the visit ends in comic chaos — collars and hats scattered everywhere. Speech balloons carry brisk, overlapping dialogue; figures are rendered in loose, ink-economical line work typical of United Press syndicate dailies. Distributed by U.P.C. News Service, Inc., strips like this one were the direct ancestors of the comic book: when publishers began reprinting newspaper dailies as collected pamphlets in the early 1930s, they established the format, page dimensions, and sequential-art grammar that defined the medium for a century.
