Soosie the Shopper

Four horizontal panels follow Soosie and her mother racing to a department-store sale. Panel one: mother fusses at the breakfast table over a pearl necklace. Panel two: a confrontation at a mirror reveals the necklace is a five-and-dime fake. Panels three and four: the pair plunge into a crushing sale-day crowd, pearls scatter, and a counter clerk cheerfully offers to charge four of the same strand to their account. The strip's brisk sight-gag rhythm, expressive ink linework, and packed crowd scenes show the daily newspaper comic at full confidence — a form whose recurring characters, speech balloons, and sequential panels, refined through Sunday supplements from the 1890s onward, directly gave the comic book its visual language and its commercial DNA.
