Elzie Crisler Segar's *Thimble Theatre* strip follows two characters through a slapstick sequence: a man in formal dress attempts to teach a smaller companion to shoot a gun. The gag escalates across six panels as the lesson goes awry, culminating in an explosion. The strip employs the visual conventions now standard to comics—sequential panels advancing narrative time, speech balloons containing dialogue, and exaggerated character expressions to convey action and reaction. *Thimble Theatre* ran in newspapers from 1919 onward, helping establish the daily comic strip format. The strip would later introduce Popeye, who became one of comics' most enduring characters.
