Tommy Town presents a fishing expedition across six panels, following two boys from preparation through mishap to resolution. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions established by early newspaper comic artists: sequential panels advance a continuous narrative, speech balloons carry dialogue and comic timing, and recurring child characters anchor reader investment across multiple strips. The gag structure—setup, escalation, and payoff—became standard to newspaper comics as they evolved from illustrated jokes into serialized entertainment. By 1905, the Sunday pages had established comics as a distinct medium, with artists pioneering the panel-based visual grammar that would define the emerging comic book form.
