A Trip to Mars
· January 25, 1911

This Sunday strip follows a shopper's fantastical journey to Mars, where Martian women offer bargain hairpins to earthly visitors. The narrative unfolds across three tiers of sequential panels, each advancing the plot through speech balloons and visual gags. The artist employs the visual conventions now standard to comics: bordered panels that control pacing, dialogue contained in balloons, and exaggerated character expressions for comedic effect. By 1911, newspaper comics had established themselves as a distinct medium, with Sunday pages offering color and larger formats for elaborate adventures. The strip's science-fiction premise—then a popular motif in comics—allowed artists to blend satire of consumer culture with imaginative scenarios, all within the constraints and possibilities of the Sunday newspaper page.
