The Two Jolly Jackies Open a School (and Close It)

This Sunday comic strip follows two mischievous characters through nine sequential panels as they attempt to operate a school, only to have it collapse into chaos. The artist uses panel borders, speech balloons, and physical comedy to drive the narrative forward. By the early 1900s, newspaper Sunday pages like this established the visual conventions that would define comics: the grid layout, recurring characters, escalating gags, and expressive caricature drawing.
