A Present for Mrs. Wife from Karl and Fritz

Victor Schramm's Sunday strip follows Karl and Fritz through a slapstick sequence as they attempt to transport a large spherical object—presumably a gift—through city streets and into a home. The eight-panel narrative employs the visual grammar now standard to newspaper comics: sequential panels with recurring characters, sight gags built through panel progression, and physical comedy that requires no dialogue to convey action. By 1906, the Sunday newspaper page had become the primary venue for comic strips, allowing artists to develop multi-panel narratives with greater sophistication than the single-panel gags of earlier decades.
