Bringing Up Father

George McManus · June 31, 1920

Bringing Up Father
George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* follows Jiggs, an Irish immigrant who struck it rich, and his wife Maggie as they navigate high society. This 1920 Sunday strip showcases the daily domestic chaos of the period: Maggie pursues culture and respectability while Jiggs yearns for simpler pleasures—corned beef, pool halls, and his working-class friends. McManus's crisp linework, sequential panel construction, and sight gags helped establish the visual grammar of modern comics. Syndicated nationally, *Bringing Up Father* reached millions and demonstrated that comics could sustain long narrative arcs and complex character relationships.
