George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* follows Jiggs, a newly wealthy Irish-American laborer, and his socially ambitious wife Maggie. The gags turn on class collision — Jiggs craving spaghetti, Maggie wielding a rolling pin. McManus draws with fluid Art Nouveau line work, elegant cross-hatching, and expressive balloon placement that guides the eye panel to panel. Launched in 1913 by King Features, the strip ran for decades and was one of the most widely syndicated comics in the world. Sunday pages like this one — printed in broadsheet sections, cut and stapled by readers — were the direct material ancestor of the comic book format.
