Buster Brown — St. Louis Republic, August 7, 1904

This Sunday page from the *St. Louis Republic* does not preserve a legible Buster Brown comic strip in its surviving photographic state — what remains is a dense broadsheet page of period advertising and news columns, with the strip itself lost to reproduction. Richard Outcault's *Buster Brown*, launched in the *New York Herald* in 1902, followed a mischievous middle-class boy and his bull terrier Tige through scrapes that always ended with Buster's written moral resolution — invariably broken the following week. Outcault had already invented the recurring newspaper character with *The Yellow Kid* (1895–98), establishing the speech balloon and sequential panel as standard tools. Sunday color comics sections, distributed nationally by syndicates, accumulated into the first reprint comic books by the 1930s.
