Tucked into the *Omaha Sunday Bee*'s February 7, 1909 edition, this Sunday comic page carries Buster Brown, the strip R. F. Outcault launched in the *New York Herald* in 1902 after his earlier *Yellow Kid* had helped touch off the American Sunday color supplement wars. Buster — mischievous, sailor-suited, blonde-bobbed — enacts some household scheme alongside his long-suffering bull terrier Tige, whose thought-balloon moralizing closes each strip in ironic counterpoint to Buster's invariably broken resolve. Outcault's clean ruled panels, integrated speech and thought balloons, and a recurring cast defined conventions every subsequent cartoonist inherited. By 1909 Buster had already been licensed onto shoes, china, and stage plays, making him among the first comic-strip characters turned into a full consumer brand.
