Buster Brown — Omaha Daily Bee, March 28, 1909
· March 28, 1909

This Sunday newspaper page from the *Omaha Daily Bee* carries an advertisement for Buster Brown stage productions alongside theatrical listings — a reminder that R. F. Outcault's mischievous, well-dressed boy and his dog Tige had already leapt from newsprint into American popular culture by 1909. Outcault had launched Buster in the *New York Herald* in 1902, building on techniques pioneered in his own *Yellow Kid* strips: sequential panels, integrated speech balloons, and a single recurring character whose weekly moral resolution (always broken) drove the gag. These Sunday pages, printed in color broadsheets and later collected into pamphlets, established the physical and narrative template from which the comic book format would directly descend within three decades.
