Below it, "Happy Hooligan's Thanksgiving Day Outing" follows Frederick Opper's tin-can-hatted tramp careening through a motoring misadventure and turkey theft that ends, inevitably, in arrest. Opper's loose ink line and rhythmic panel pacing — established from 1900 in *Hearst* papers — helped fix the Sunday page's grammar: recurring cast, episodic humiliation, punchline-final panel. These syndicated broadsheet pages, collected and reprinted through the 1930s, are the direct structural ancestor of the comic book format.
