Hawkshaw the Detective

Two concurrent strips by Gus Mager showcase the visual vocabulary early newspaper comics inherited from older print traditions and refined into modern form. The top strip follows Hawkshaw, a bumbling detective whose oversized head and exaggerated features derive from caricature conventions. Below, a domestic comedy features a small child disrupting his father's office—slapstick scenarios that rely on visual gags, sequential panel progression, and dialogue balloons to advance the story. By 1913, newspaper Sunday pages had become laboratories for visual storytelling, where artists developed the spatial and narrative techniques that would define comics for generations.
