Sunday Comic Section
This Sunday newspaper page from the St. Louis Republic demonstrates the early comic strip format that emerged in American newspapers around 1900. The page combines sequential panel narrative with typography, photographs, and illustrated advertisements—a hybrid layout characteristic of the Sunday supplement. Comic strips of this era inherited visual strategies from earlier satirical prints and lithographs: speech balloons, sequential action across panels, and recurring characters that invited readers to follow ongoing stories week to week. These newspaper comics, published cheaply and distributed to millions, became the direct precursor to the comic book format that followed. The strips' visual grammar—panel division, perspective, and character design—would prove foundational to the medium's later development.
