Spareribs and Gravy in the Woof-Nuff Arena
George McManus's comic strip follows two anthropomorphic characters through a series of gags set in an arena. The narrative unfolds across eight panels in a grid layout, employing the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: sequential panels, speech balloons advancing plot and humor, and recurring characters in varied situations. McManus uses exaggerated proportions and physical comedy—pratfalls, chases, confrontations—to drive the action. The strip exemplifies the Sunday comics section that emerged as a major newspaper feature in the 1890s, establishing the formal and stylistic grammar that would define the medium: panel borders creating temporal sequence, dialogue enclosed in balloons, and character design emphasizing personality through silhouette and costume.
