Spareribs and Gravy Kidnap the King
George McManus's Sunday comic strip follows two scheming characters through an elaborate kidnapping caper told across eight panels and a character strip. The narrative progresses from left to right, top to bottom—a visual logic that became standard in American comics. McManus employs exaggerated caricature and physical comedy typical of early 1910s newspaper humor. The strip demonstrates the formal innovations newspapers pioneered: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and visual gags sustaining a coherent story across multiple frames. Such Sunday pages were central to comics' emergence as a distinct art form before comic books existed.
