Jimmy—Will Papa Ever See the Circus Through?
A Sunday newspaper comic strip from the Omaha Daily Bee featuring Jimmy and his father attempting to attend a circus. The strip's multi-panel layout tracks their mishaps through a succession of visual gags: crowds, disruptions, and escalating chaos prevent them from watching the performance. The artist employs the formal vocabulary of early newspaper comics—rectangular panels, speech balloons, sequential action, and recurring characters—that defined the medium's visual language. By 1913, Sunday comic sections had become standard newspaper features, with serialized strips driving readership and establishing the narrative and graphic conventions that would shape comic books.
