Twelve panels plus a decorative footer strip follow Hans and Fritz as they sic a black cat on the Captain's hedgehog-like head of hair, producing escalating chaos — biting, howling, a desperate cry of "Stop it! Dod gast it! Doctor! Help!" — before the Inspector demands an explanation and the boys shrug it off with cheerful insolence. Rudolf Dirks launched *The Katzenjammer Kids* in *The New York Journal* in December 1897, drawing directly from Wilhelm Busch's *Max und Moritz*. It is among the first strips to use sequential panels and speech balloons as a consistent storytelling grammar. By 1914 the Sunday page — printed in full broadsheet color elsewhere, here in black-and-white regional reprint — had already established the recurring-cast comic strip as American popular culture's dominant weekly ritual.
