Johnny Ray as Jiggs from Bringing Up Father
Unknown authorUnknown author · 1920

This photograph documents vaudeville performer Johnny Ray dressed as Jiggs, the working-class Irish protagonist of George McManus's comic strip *Bringing Up Father* (1913–2000). McManus's strip pioneered the use of recurring characters and domestic conflict as humor, following Jiggs and his social-climbing wife Maggie through their struggles with newly acquired wealth. The strip's visual language—panel layouts, speech balloons, and exaggerated expressions—helped establish conventions that became fundamental to American comics. Ray's stage adaptation demonstrates how newspaper comics became cultural touchstones, crossing into theater and vaudeville during the medium's formative decades.
