Character Study Sketches
This page of rapid character studies demonstrates the visual shorthand developing in early twentieth-century illustration. Five distinct male heads explore caricature conventions—exaggerated profiles, simplified features, varied expressions—techniques that would become essential to comic strip design. The sketches show an artist testing physiognomic types: the sharp-featured youth, the elongated intellectual with glasses, the mustachioed gentleman in formal wear, and the angular, ascetic profile. Such studies were foundational practice for newspaper cartoonists, who needed to render recurring characters consistently across daily panels while maintaining expressive clarity at small reproduction sizes. This sheet captures the moment when popular illustration was codifying visual language that would define the emerging medium of comics.
