Sunday Newspaper Advertisement Page, 1911
· July 9, 1911

This San Antonio Express page reveals how early 20th-century newspapers integrated commerce with content. Rather than sequential comic strips, the layout features large display advertisements for department stores, household goods, and clothing mixed with smaller notices. The visual hierarchy—bold sans-serif headlines, illustration cuts of products, and varied type sizes—established design principles that would shape comic book layouts. Department store ads like Joske Bros. Co. dominated Sunday pages, their illustrated figures and promotional language resembling the visual storytelling techniques emerging in contemporaneous comic strips. This pre-standardized format shows newspapers still experimenting with how to organize text, image, and advertising into readable pages, before the systematic panel-and-balloon grammar of comic strips became dominant.
