Chinese Room Wall Section, Palace of Fontainebleau
Frederick Marschall · 1885

Frederick Marschall's watercolor documents the ornamental program of Fontainebleau's Chinese Room, a mid-nineteenth-century interior epitomizing European chinoiserie. The composition shows decorative panels stacked vertically: patterned silk grounds above, framed lacquer panels with gilt figures in landscape settings at center, and upholstered furnishings below. The left panel depicts an outdoor gathering in warm yellows; the right features a black-ground lacquer with gilt pavilions and figures among mountains. A blue porcelain vessel occupies the central axis. This record preserves the layered artifice of Orientalist interior design—where Chinese and Japanese aesthetic vocabulary was interpreted through European taste and manufacturing techniques.
