Heraldic Panel with Cherubs

Frederick Marschall · 1885

Heraldic Panel with Cherubs
Frederick Marschall's ornamental panel exemplifies the decorative typography and engraved illustration styles that dominated late-19th-century commercial printing. This gold-leaf composition—centered on a fleur-de-lis escutcheon with crowned cherub, flanked by architectural detail, botanical elements, and supporting putti—reflects the visual vocabulary of Baroque revival design. Such embellished frames and borders became stock elements in newspaper mastheads and decorative printing, establishing ornamental conventions that would inform early comic strip layouts and panel design as sequential art emerged in the 1890s.
