Salon Interior Design Study, Palace of Fontainebleau

Frederick Marschall · 1885

Salon Interior Design Study, Palace of Fontainebleau
This architectural rendering documents ornamental wall paneling from the Louis XIII salon at Fontainebleau. The study shows gilt carved details, painted door panels with mythological motifs, and a portrait medallion within an elaborate octagonal frame—characteristic of early 17th-century French royal interiors. The vertical pilasters feature blue-ground decorative panels with putti and architectural ornaments. Such documentation was essential as architects and decorators of the 19th century studied historical precedents to inform contemporary palace restoration and design. The systematic recording of these classical schemes preserved knowledge of period craftsmanship and aesthetic principles.
