Matinée d'Hiver sur les Quais
Félix Hilaire Buhot, French, 1847–1898 · 1877

Félix Hilaire Buhot's etching captures a winter scene along the quays, where a steamship dominates the composition with billowing smoke rising from its stack. The vessel sits grounded on the beach, surrounded by figures engaged in daily commerce and leisure—vendors, pedestrians, and dock workers populate the sandy shore. A pier structure extends into the background, lined with flags and activity. Buhot employs fine crosshatching and varied line weight to establish atmospheric depth and movement, techniques characteristic of 19th-century printmaking. The work demonstrates the artist's interest in modern industrial life and urban waterfront activity, subjects that engaged many French artists of the period.
