Le Pont-au-Change

Charles Meryon, French, 1821–1868 · 1854

Le Pont-au-Change
Charles Meryon's etching captures the medieval Exchange Bridge spanning the Seine in Paris, with its characteristic arches and the Conciergerie palace rising beyond. A hot air balloon drifts overhead in this romantic vision of urban modernity meeting historical architecture. Meryon's precise etching technique—with its delicate cross-hatching and architectural detail—established him as a master of topographical printmaking in mid-nineteenth-century France. His Paris series documented the city's transformation while celebrating its enduring monuments, blending documentary accuracy with poetic atmosphere to create prints that influenced both artists and the developing visual culture of the era.
