L'Abside de Notre-Dame de Paris

Charles Meryon, French, 1821–1868 · 1854

L'Abside de Notre-Dame de Paris
Charles Meryon's etching depicts the apse of Notre-Dame Cathedral from the Seine, showing the Gothic structure's twin towers and buttressed east end. The composition places the monumental architecture across the middle distance, with the foreground rendered as sandy riverbank activity—workers, a cart, beached boats—that grounds the scene in everyday Paris life. Meryon's precise linear technique and attention to architectural detail exemplify mid-nineteenth-century printmaking, where etching allowed artists to document urban landscapes with both topographic accuracy and atmospheric effect. The work captures Notre-Dame before the 1870s restoration campaign, offering a historical record of the cathedral's condition and the Seine's working waterfront during the Second Empire.
