Le Lapin de Garenne

Felix Bracquemond, France, 1833 – 1914 · 1870

Le Lapin de Garenne
Felix Bracquemond's etched study of a rabbit viewed from above presents the animal in dynamic foreshortening, its body stretched vertically across the composition with front paws raised and ears alert. The careful cross-hatching and linear shading techniques characteristic of 19th-century printmaking create volume and texture in the fur. While predating the formal development of narrative comic strips, such animal studies contributed to the visual vocabulary that would shape early comic art—the exaggerated poses, careful anatomical observation, and expressive character work that later defined the medium's approach to depicting creatures with personality and agency.
