Allegorical Engraving with Ornamental Border
· Early 18th century

This engraved print demonstrates the classical visual tradition that preceded modern comic narratives. The composition features allegorical figures within an elaborate decorative border containing circular medallions and floral ornaments. The central scene depicts mythological or allegorical subject matter rendered in the formal engraving style of the period. While predating the newspaper comic strip by centuries, such prints established foundational compositional principles—the framing device, narrative layering, and organized visual hierarchy—that would later inform the sequential art language of early 20th-century comics. The ornamental surround became a model for panel borders in emerging comic formats.
