Tree Study

Robert Frederick Blum's delicate pencil sketch depicts a stylized tree with radiating branches and an elongated trunk. Loose gestural marks at the crown suggest foliage, while the lower portion shows linear, almost decorative patterning. This exploratory drawing reveals Blum's interest in formal botanical structure and decorative design. An accomplished illustrator and printmaker, Blum worked across newspapers and magazines during the 1880s–90s, when serialized visual narratives were establishing the visual language of sequential art. His commercial and fine art practice bridged the emerging worlds of editorial cartooning and artistic illustration that would eventually crystallize into the comic strip format.
