Figure Studies

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch page demonstrates the rapid figure work that trained newspaper illustrators of the late nineteenth century. Two studies show gestural poses rendered with economical line—the upper figure dynamic and angular, the lower more composed. Such drawings preceded formal newspaper comic strips but established visual conventions: expressive gestures, simplified anatomy, and ink line that would define the medium. Blum's generation of illustrators developed the visual shorthand that cartoonists adapted when sequential narrative became standardized in American newspapers during the 1890s. These studies reveal the foundation of modern comics' visual grammar.
