Venetian Harbor Study

Robert Frederick Blum's ink sketch captures a Venice waterfront with characteristic economy of line. At left, a steamship with prominent smokestacks; center, the distinctive domes and spires of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute; right, harbor architecture and mooring posts. Blum, an American illustrator and painter, used such rapid compositional studies during his travels to develop subjects for larger works. The sketch demonstrates the commercial artist's working method: quick notation of architectural forms, spatial recession, and atmospheric effect—techniques central to Blum's prolific career in magazine illustration and fine art.
