Study of a Man in Profile

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch demonstrates the rapid observational drawing that would define American illustration in the late nineteenth century. This profile study—executed in pen with assured, economical lines—captures a figure in a wide-brimmed hat rendered from multiple angles on a single sheet. Such working sketches were fundamental to commercial illustrators and newspaper artists, who needed to rapidly develop character types and poses. Blum's fluid line work and spatial composition reflect the technical vocabulary that newspaper cartoonists and comic strip pioneers were simultaneously establishing: the ability to convey personality and movement through minimal but expressive marks.
