Figure Studies

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch sheet demonstrates the quick observational drawing that underpinned late-nineteenth-century newspaper illustration. The five studies—a child's head in profile, a small dog, a bird, and two figure compositions—show the economy of line essential to commercial art before photographic reproduction. Such practice sheets were the foundation of the visual language emerging in newspaper comics: the ability to render recognizable characters swiftly and expressively. Blum's contemporaries were establishing conventions—distinct character types, readable silhouettes, expressive poses—that would become the visual grammar of the comic strip. These economical sketches capture the working process behind the Sunday pages and daily strips that preceded and informed the development of the modern comic book.
