Robert Frederick Blum's ink sketch demonstrates the rapid gestural drawing technique that would inform his later work in illustration and design. Working in the late nineteenth century, Blum helped establish American illustration as a distinct visual practice, bridging fine art training with commercial application. His economy of line and attention to form reflect the academic tradition while pointing toward the more economical visual language emerging in print media.
