Figure Studies
Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · circa 1880

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch demonstrates the observational drawing that underpinned his work as an illustrator and artist. These quick figure studies—capturing seated and standing poses with economical line work—show the foundational skill that would characterize American commercial illustration in the late nineteenth century. Such studies were essential training for newspaper and magazine illustrators, who needed to render human figures with accuracy and speed. Blum's career bridged fine art and popular media, establishing visual conventions that would influence the emerging language of sequential narrative art in newspapers.
