Character Studies

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch sheet demonstrates the observational drawing practice central to nineteenth-century illustration. Three studies of a woman's head—rendered in profile and three-quarter view, with variations in millinery and expression—show the artist's method for capturing character through line and proportion. Such studies populated artists' notebooks and served as reference material for commercial work in newspapers and magazines.
