Study of a Woman with Umbrella

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch demonstrates the rapid observational drawing that shaped late-nineteenth-century illustration. Two figure studies—one detailed, one abbreviated—show a woman with parasol rendered in economical pen strokes. Blum's training in commercial illustration and printmaking refined the gestural line work and compositional clarity that newspaper cartoonists would develop into the visual language of comics: economical mark-making, clear character silhouettes, and expressive anatomy conveyed through confident draftsmanship.
