Study of Draped Figures

This sketch by Robert Frederick Blum demonstrates the foundational practice of figure study that underlay late 19th-century illustration and early comic art. Five standing figures in flowing robes are rendered in loose pen strokes across sequential panels—a compositional approach that anticipates the panel grid system central to comics. Blum, a pioneering illustrator for major newspapers and magazines, helped establish visual conventions that comic strip artists would codify: the division of narrative space, consistent character positioning, and economical line work for rapid reproduction.
