Street Scene Study
Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · 1881

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch captures urban life with quick, assured linework. Two figures occupy a modest streetscape defined by simplified architectural forms—a doorway, wooden structures, laundry lines overhead. The drawing's economy of line and attention to human gesture reveal an artist studying composition and movement, skills essential to the emerging visual vocabulary of sequential art. By the 1880s, illustrators like Blum were experimenting with how to convey narrative and character through minimal marks, developing the visual grammar—panel division, expressive posture, environmental detail—that would soon define the newspaper comic strips and strips that birthed the modern comic book.
