Sketch of a Standing Man
Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · 1876

Robert Frederick Blum's quick pen study captures a figure in motion, head tilted back, arms gesturing expressively. The economical line work—confident and gestural—demonstrates the observational skill that would define Blum's career as an illustrator and painter. Working in the 1870s, Blum belonged to a generation of American artists who trained through constant sketch practice, translating live observation into publishable illustration. Such studies formed the foundation of commercial art production, from newspaper supplements to periodical illustration, visual traditions that would soon evolve into the sequential narrative language of the modern comic strip.
