Figure Studies
Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · 1883

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch page demonstrates the observational drawing that underpinned late-nineteenth-century illustration. The two studies—a horse's head rendered with confident hatching and a seated figure in loose, gestural lines—reveal the working method of artists who supplied newspapers and magazines. Blum, an accomplished illustrator and painter, worked during the transitional period when wood-engraved newspaper illustrations were giving way to photomechanical reproduction. Such studies served as reference material and compositional experiments, translating live observation into the linear vocabulary required for print. These pages document the craft foundation from which the visual conventions of sequential art would emerge.
