Figure Study
Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · 1884

Robert Frederick Blum's ink sketch depicts a fashionably dressed figure in a top hat and tailored jacket with voluminous skirt—a study in late-nineteenth-century silhouette. Blum, an accomplished illustrator and painter, used such drawings to develop character types and poses for his commercial work. This casual study demonstrates the kind of figure sketching that would inform newspaper illustration during the era when sequential comics emerged from the visual vocabulary of the daily press. American illustrators of this period refined techniques—expressive linework, proportion, gesture—that became foundational to comic strip artistry and the visual grammar that defined the medium's infancy.
