Landscape Study
This pen sketch demonstrates the rapid notation technique favored by illustrators of the late nineteenth century. The artist captures rolling terrain and distant figures through economical linework, establishing spatial depth with minimal detail. Such studies served as foundational material for finished illustrations destined for newspaper and magazine publication. The gestural quality—particularly in the handling of foreground shadows and middle-ground formations—reflects the training methods of American artists working in the 1870s, when quick observational drawing remained essential to commercial illustration practice.
