Female Nude Study

This ink drawing on paper demonstrates the academic figure study tradition that trained American illustrators in the late nineteenth century. James Wells Champney, a prolific painter and illustrator, used such studies to develop anatomical understanding essential to commercial work. The confident line work and cross-hatching show the hand of an experienced draftsman. These foundational studies informed the visual language that illustrators brought to early comic strips—the economy of line, gesture, and form that would later populate the newspaper pages where comics emerged as a distinct medium in the 1890s and early 1900s.
