Dixie

Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1861

Dixie
Winslow Homer's sketch depicts a figure seated on a barrel labeled 'Dixie,' the popular song that became an anthem of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The work combines portraiture with symbolic object placement—a common strategy in nineteenth-century graphic art. Homer, who would become one of America's foremost painters, worked as an illustrator and contributed designs to Harper's Weekly during this period. The sketch demonstrates the era's approach to visual commentary through character studies and compositional arrangement, techniques that preceded the formalized panel structures of later comic strips but shared similar aims: narrative economy and immediate visual communication.
