Man Riding a Horse
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1862

A sketch by Winslow Homer depicting a rider on horseback, rendered in pen with characteristic loose linework. Homer, primarily known as a painter and illustrator, created numerous drawings throughout his career documenting American life. This figure study demonstrates his interest in capturing movement and posture, subjects that would inform his later illustrations for Harper's Weekly during the Civil War era. The economy of line and attention to anatomical structure reflect the illustrator's training and eye for documentary detail.
