Marching Infantry Column

Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1862

Marching Infantry Column
Winslow Homer's sketch captures Union soldiers on the march during the Civil War. Rendered in ink with loose, economical lines, the composition divides sharply between foreground figures—three soldiers depicted with anatomical precision—and a receding column that dissolves into gestural marks suggesting depth and mass movement. Homer's technique here anticipates the visual strategies of sequential art: distinct focal points guide the viewer's eye, individual characterization contrasts with collective action, and spatial recession creates narrative momentum. As a war correspondent, Homer developed a visual vocabulary for depicting military life that influenced later illustrations and comics, establishing conventions for rendering groups, uniforms, and the individual soldier within formations that would persist in the medium.
