Sketch for 'The Wreck'
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1881

This preparatory sketch by Winslow Homer depicts a maritime disaster with figures clustered around wreckage and a pole. Homer worked across media—painting, printmaking, illustration—and frequently turned to dramatic nautical scenes. The loose, gestural line work shows an artist studying composition and human movement before committing to finished work. Homer's illustrations for popular publications helped establish visual conventions that would shape sequential narrative art: varied figure poses, spatial arrangement suggesting action and drama, and careful attention to how viewers' eyes move across the page. His method of rapid sketching and refinement became foundational practice for artists developing the visual language of comics.
